How to practice Butyrate supplements
Typical dose: 300–600 mg (sodium or calcium butyrate) 1–2× daily with meals. Tributyrin forms offer better absorption and less odor. Best used short-term during gut recovery or when fiber intake is low. Long-term, focus on increasing natural butyrate via prebiotic fibers and resistant starch rather than relying solely on supplements.
The evidence behind Butyrate supplements
Butyrate fuels colon cells, strengthens the intestinal barrier, and reduces systemic inflammation, all of which influence brain health via the gut–brain axis. Animal and early human data suggest benefits for mood and metabolic health, but direct cognitive trials are limited. Odor and tolerability issues reduce compliance.
