A recombinant human granulocyte–macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) that stimulates innate immune activity and neuroinflammatory repair mechanisms; marketed as Leukine®, used in oncology and being tested for Alzheimer’s.

How to practice GM-CSF (Sargramostim / Leukine®)
Currently investigational for neurodegenerative use. Administered as subcutaneous injections (typically 250 µg/m² daily for 5 days/week over 3 weeks in trials). Available clinically only for hematologic and transplant indications. Off-label use not recommended outside clinical research due to uncertain safety and optimal dosing for brain health.
The evidence behind GM-CSF (Sargramostim / Leukine®)
Early RCTs from the University of Colorado (2021–2023) show that sargramostim improved cognition and reduced amyloid/tau pathology in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s. Mechanism: reactivation of microglia and recruitment of protective immune responses that clear debris and promote neuronal repair. Data remain preliminary with small sample sizes and short duration.
