How to practice Keep phone away from bed
Charge your phone outside the bedroom or at least beyond arm’s reach. Use a traditional alarm clock to eliminate “alarm excuse.” Activate Do Not Disturb mode 30–60 minutes before bed. If kept nearby, place it face down and silence alerts. Reclaim the bed as a screen-free, relaxation-only zone.
The evidence behind Keep phone away from bed
Smartphones emit short-wavelength light that suppresses melatonin and, more significantly, trigger cognitive and emotional arousal through notifications and social media. Behavioral studies show phone proximity increases nighttime awakenings and perceived sleep latency. Mechanism: both sensory (light) and psychological (anticipation, reward-seeking) activation impair circadian wind-down. Evidence is consistent across observational and intervention trials.
