How to practice Methylated B vitamins

For most adults, a B-complex containing methylated folate (400–1,000 mcg), B12 (250–1,000 mcg), and B6 (5–25 mg) is sufficient. Adjust your dosage to manage your homocysteine levels to under 9 mcmol/L. Take with food once daily. Especially helpful for those with high stress, vegan diets, or MTHFR variants. Avoid megadoses unless prescribed. Pair with omega-3s for synergistic effect on homocysteine and mood regulation.

The evidence behind Methylated B vitamins

Methylation supports serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine balance. Elevated homocysteine correlates with faster brain atrophy and cognitive decline. The landmark VITACOG study demonstrated that B-vitamin supplementation slowed the rate of brain atrophy by up to 53% in individuals with high homocysteine, but crucially, this neuroprotective effect was only observed in participants with sufficient Omega-3 fatty acid levels. Benefits are less clear in already replete individuals. Methylated forms bypass common genetic variants (MTHFR) that impair folate metabolism. Overuse can cause insomnia or jitteriness in sensitive individuals.
