How to practice Omega-3 (fish oil)

Choose a molecularly distilled fish or algae oil providing at minimum 1–2 g/day combined EPA+DHA. For optimal brain health, aim for 1-2g of DHA in particular, and aim for the top end of this range (2g) if you have one or two copies for APOE4. Ideally titrate your intake based on blood biomarker testing for Omega 3, aiming for an Omega 3 ratio in the 8-12% range. Take with meals containing fat for better absorption. Refrigerate liquid forms to prevent oxidation. Those eating 2+ servings of fatty fish weekly may not need supplementation. Check third-party purity certification (e.g., IFOS, USP). Avoid “mega dosing.” People on blood thinners should consult a clinician before starting high doses (>3 g/day). If you are at risk of atrial fibrillation, talk to your doctors first as fish oil can increase risk.

The evidence behind Omega-3 (fish oil)

EPA and especially DHA improve membrane fluidity, reduce neuroinflammation, and support neurotransmission. Dozens of RCTs and meta-analyses show modest cognitive and cardiovascular benefits, particularly for those with low fish intake or mild cognitive impairment. The data for mood and attention support mild but meaningful improvements. Oxidized or low-quality oils can negate benefits.
