How to practice Zinc
Aim for 8–11 mg/day from food or supplements, especially if zinc deficient; do not exceed 40 mg/day long-term. Choose zinc picolinate or citrate for absorption. Take with food to avoid nausea. If supplementing above 25 mg/day for more than a month, add 1–2 mg copper daily or eat copper-rich foods (nuts, dark chocolate) to prevent imbalance. If you are in the early stages of a cold, use zinc lozenges to reduce length of illness.
The evidence behind Zinc
Zinc modulates synaptic signaling, neurogenesis, and immune response. Deficiency is linked to brain fog, low mood, and impaired immunity. RCTs support supplementation in deficient individuals for improved cognition and stress resilience, though excessive zinc can disrupt copper balance.
