Clearing the Air: Pollution's Hidden Toll on Brain Health

Bottom line: Long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) has been linked to increased amyloid plaques in the brain, suggesting a potentially significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

When you think of air pollution, you probably think of lung health. But emerging research from the Emory Healthy Brain Study reveals these microscopic particles may be silently affecting your brain. PM2.5 particles are so tiny (about 30 times smaller than a human hair) they can bypass your body's defenses, enter your bloodstream, and potentially reach your brain.

The study found that people with higher exposure to PM2.5 over one to three years showed biomarker patterns consistent with greater amyloid accumulation in the brain - one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Most concerning, these effects were observed even at pollution levels currently considered "safe" by environmental standards.

The good news? Simple protective measures can help. Using home air purifiers, wearing masks on heavily polluted days, and staying indoors when air quality is poor can reduce your exposure.
