HRV Training for Cognitive Resilience

What it is: HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats and is a marker of your body's resilience and stress response.

Why it matters: Higher HRV is associated with better emotional regulation, cognitive function, and overall brain health. It indicates a well-balanced nervous system and can help prevent cognitive decline by reducing chronic stress on the brain.

How to improve it: Start with short 5-minute HRV breathing exercises, such as the one demonstrated in this video with Andrew Huberman. You can also use a HRV tracking wearable device to help guide your practice towards increasing your HRV.

BetterBrain Tip: Use HRV as a feedback tool to learn what activities or interventions work best for you in managing stress and supporting cognitive resilience.

Semaglutide and Alzheimers

Summary: A recent study published by the Alzeheimer's Association highlights that semaglutide, a popular treatment for type 2 diabetes, may significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Research Highlights: In a large analysis of over 1 million U.S. patients with type 2 diabetes, semaglutide was associated with a 40% to 70% lower risk of a first-time AD diagnosis compared to other diabetes medications, including insulin. The study's findings suggest that, beyond blood sugar control, semaglutide might offer neuroprotective benefits by reducing amyloid-related risks in the brain.

Why This Is Important: Diabetes and Alzheimer's share common pathways, such as inflammation and insulin resistance. Semaglutide's effects on these pathways may make it a promising candidate in dementia prevention for diabetes patients. While this new data suggests dementia prevention benefits for diabetics, the impact on dementia risk for non-diabetics has yet to be well understood.

Martha's Journey to Targeted Health Optimization

"My health routine used to feel like guesswork. I was taking handfuls of supplements without really knowing if they were helping," shares Martha, who joined BetterBrain earlier this year.

After reviewing her blood work, we discovered something interesting - her very low fasting glucose wasn't a concern, but actually indicated excellent insulin sensitivity. To better understand her blood sugar patterns, Martha started using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM).

"The CGM data helped me see how my body responds to different foods and meal timing. It was fascinating to see the real-time impact of my choices," Martha explains.

We also streamlined her supplement routine, focusing on three key nutrients her bloodwork showed she needed: Omega-3s for brain health, methylated B vitamins, and vitamin D. "Instead of taking everything under the sun, I now have a simple, targeted approach that I can actually stick to."

Three months later, Martha's homocysteine improved, and her vitamin D levels normalized. "I feel more confident knowing my health decisions are based on data, not just general advice. Plus, my new routine is actually simpler than before!"
