Amyloid plaques build up between brain cells. Tau tangles form inside them. These changes can begin many years before symptoms, and blood biomarkers can now help detect them. What they cannot do is predict your future on their own. Here is what each protein does, and what you can measure today.
One builds up between neurons, the other forms inside them.
Amyloid beta is a fragment produced when a larger protein, APP, is broken down. Normally it is cleared from the brain. In Alzheimer's, certain forms accumulate into plaques between neurons. Tau helps support the internal structure of neurons. In Alzheimer's it becomes abnormally phosphorylated and forms tangles inside them. Tau burden tends to track cognitive symptoms more closely than amyloid burden does.
Not everyone with a biomarker change will develop dementia. The biology and the symptoms do not start at the same time, which is why a result is most useful read alongside the rest of your biology.

Amyloid plaques are a hallmark of Alzheimer's biology, but biomarker positivity alone does not tell you whether or when symptoms will develop.
Can you test for amyloid and tau without a brain scan?
Yes. Blood biomarkers such as pTau-217 can help detect Alzheimer's-related pathology in appropriate clinical settings.
What removes amyloid plaques naturally?
No food or supplement has been shown in randomized trials to reliably remove existing amyloid plaques.
Does everyone develop amyloid with age?
Amyloid positivity becomes more common with age, but it is not universal and does not always correspond to cognitive impairment.
