For most adults, less is better. If you drink, limit to ≤1 standard drink on days you drink and avoid binging. Women, smaller adults, and APOE-ε4 carriers may be more sensitive to harm. Occasional use for social relaxation is reasonable; daily or heavy use accelerates long-term brain aging.

Moderate alcohol can relax muscles, ease social anxiety, moderate glucose spikes and help some people fall asleep faster. But alcohol disrupts REM sleep later in the night and increases nighttime awakenings.
