Everyone carries two copies of the APOE gene, in variants called e2, e3, and e4. Carrying one or two copies of APOE4 raises your statistical risk of developing Alzheimer's, but it is risk, not destiny. Many APOE4 carriers never develop the disease, and many people without APOE4 do. Under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), health insurers and employers cannot use your genetic information against you. GINA does not extend to life, disability, or long-term care insurance, which is worth considering before any genetic test.
